A space elevator is a structure designed to transport materials from earth to space.
The Japan Space Elevator Association is planning to build an elevator,which is estimated to cost US$ 9 billion.the technology which powers Japan's high
-speed bullet trains will be used to run the elevator.
The elevator will have light but strong cables made of carbon nanotubes,tethered to surface of the Earth and reach the satillite docking station in orbit above Earth.the centrifugal forces of the Earth's spin will keep the cables taut.
The elevator when built will be a world wonder.it will be tallest structure ever built,being 180,720 times taller than the CN tower in Canada, which is 533metres tall.The elevator would equal approximately a fourth of the distance to the moon.
Space elevators are a good alternative to a rocket-powered space launch,saving cost and energy.
The idea of the space elevator was first conceived by Russian rocket scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.
